Since 1998, the Coast Cultural Alliance (CCA) has produced the Purple Banner Studio and Gallery Guide, promoting Sunshine Coast artists from Langdale to Lund. Building on this success, CCA artists and board members developed the idea of an off-season Art Crawl, between summer markets and Christmas craft fairs.

The first Sunshine Coast Art Crawl took place October 23–24, 2010, featuring 74 venues from Langdale to Lund, including six in Powell River. Within five years, participation grew to 141 venues, including 22 in Powell River, before returning to the southern Coast. Northern Coast artists later reactivated the Powell River Studio Tour, now held each summer.
In keeping with the CCA’s non-judgmental mandate, the Art Crawl welcomes all disciplines, with no formal screening beyond ensuring venues are well-presented and safe. Free, self-directed and welcoming, the Art Crawl invites everyone to explore art, meet artists in their studios, discover new places, enjoy time with family and friends, and take home unique treasures and lasting memories.
