Charles de Gaulle may have said it best: “The better I get to know men, the more I find myself loving dogs.”

Indeed, humankind has been a rather tough sell recently, and our pets have never been so important to us. They model friendship, loyalty, joy, and unconditional love. They give us a sense of purpose every day, in little and big ways. They keep us active and in-the-moment, and they have our backs. It won’t come as a surprise to readers that Diego’s Den is ZOOM’s most popular section.

ZOOM’s creator, Edmund Arceo, understands all that we owe our pets. Animals were a strong presence in his family home, growing up.

“I remember my father would come home from work and the first thing he would ask is if the dogs have been fed. We teased him about this because he would not ask if any of us kids had eaten, he was more concerned with the dogs. He said that it’s because if we are hungry, we can go get something to eat. The dogs depend on us, and it is our responsibility to make sure they are cared for, as they care about us, and protect us too.”

And from the very first issue of ZOOM, he included Diego’s Den, named after his beautiful yellow Labrador. This was to be a space dedicated to our beloved companions. Edmund got an enthusiastic response when he invited viewers to share photos of their pets, and by the second issue, the number of submitted photos had doubled. Diego’s Den has been popular, and populated, with great pet photos ever since. Each ZOOM issue features two to four pages of pets! Cats, birds, bunnies, and all other friendly animal companions are welcome. Diego crossed the Rainbow Bridge in 2014. Now Miguel, a Labrador Retriever/German Short-haired Pointer (GSP) mix, and Scout, a young GSP, are the illustrious hosts of Diego’s Den. They would love to meet your pets.
