Most of us will experience some hearing loss as we age. One in three adults between the ages of 65 and 74, and half of those over age 75, experience some sort of hearing impairment. Currently, scientists do not know how to prevent this. But at least we can be thankful for Hear on the Coast, which offers the latest in helpful technology and the services of long-time Sunshine Coast professional Terra Mackenzie-Dannes, a Registered Hearing Instrument Practitioner.

Terra has lived in different communities on the Coast for 26 years and raised a family here. She is widely known for her volunteer activities for various organizations, including the Fraser Valley Child Development Centre, the Royal Columbian Hospital Special Care Nursery Support Group, the Gibsons Landing Sailing Club, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 140, and sports teams. In addition to all this, she teaches acrobatics.

Founding Hear on the Coast was a particular labour of love that served to fill a growing need for a continuity of hearing care on the Sunshine Coast.

Who are her clients?

Terra’s clients range in age from 16 to 107, with some travelling from as far away as Haida Gwaii.

She has noticed that her clients these days show more awareness of hearing issues and seek help earlier and with greater urgency. In her words:

“Many people are taking care of their hearing health earlier in life compared to previous generations. They have a greater understanding of hearing loss and how it impacts our relationships [and] business interactions, as well as how hearing loss can have the ability to adversely affect our ability to recognize words.”

Hear on the Coast uses an individualized approach to find hearing solutions within a client’s budget. It has a fully mobile service, which is a great help for people who are housebound. Services include hearing testing, hearing protection, musician plugs, and hearing aids.

Locally owned and operated, Hear on the Coast aims to be the leading client-centred hearing clinic on the Coast. Appointments are available at the Sechelt clinic, the Pender Harbour Health Centre, or in your own home. Terra is happy to be of service:

“I am very grateful for the opportunity to help our community members have better hearing. I regularly see people gaining confidence, participating more in activities, and enjoying life!”
