ZOOM’s focus has always been photography. The magazine’s original tagline of “Life on the Coast, in pictures” is still appropriate, because sometimes words simply fail when it comes to describing the splendours of our Sunshine Coast surroundings. And a camera lens with a trained, keen, and sensitive eye behind it can grasp the world in an exquisite pause that gives us a moment to reflect.

ZOOM has more written content now, but images are still our principal storytellers. Images are what inspire residents to send copies of ZOOM to faraway friends. Images are what collectors of ZOOM want to amass in their waiting rooms and hospitality suites. ZOOM’s creator, Edmund Arceo, believes that pictures and design are important, impactful, and inspiring.

“I have always been interested in photography, and some of my own work has occasionally found its way into ZOOM. But we have many talented and accomplished photographers whose work I admire, so their work gets prime exposure. Just putting together layouts showcasing their images is a great source of joy and inspiration.”

ZOOM’s feature photographers are diverse, but what they share is their ability to capture moments. Moments of stillness, moments of found composition, moments of connection, joy, and poignancy, moments of purity and wildness, moments that evoke deep insight. They also capture the diversity, the vastness, and the intimacy of our surroundings in a panorama of mountains, in the depths of a flower, in a grin. Our photographers hike, paddle, dive, fly, hurry, and wait to capture the magic they know is there. They assess light and shadow to help show the unique charm of our homes, and they will tell us to lift our chins, or look a little more this way, to show the unique charms of our faces.

Photography and videography are the common language of humans these days. They allow us to communicate our reality to others who speak different verbal languages and live in very different circumstances. Our talented professionals and amateur photographers help us share our blessings and connect us to this planet and each other.
